The abundant surrounding waters hold all five salmon species, including the prized King salmon. The inside passage, in which our community sits, provides amazing opportunities for all levels of adventure seekers. Whether you’re looking to land the big one or hook your first fish, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for while immersed in Alaska’s rugged and natural beauty.

Fredrick Sound is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Petersburg waters are the perfect marine environment for migrating humpback whales who feed on the nutrient rich waters of Fredrick Sound. Other local wildlife sightings include seals, sea lions, rafts of sea otters, porpoises, black bears, mountain goats, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles and many other varieties of birds. Because we have so much whale activity and they spend so much time relaxing in our waters, it was the perfect location to base the Marine Mammal Center out of our little home here in Petersburg, take a look!
